Very often we don’t get enough time to fully prepare for a natural disaster.  Each year we seem to experience bigger disasters with far reaching destruction.  Its clear to see, then, why being as prepared as we can be in advance for a disaster is a key to staying safe.  So, what are some things to do ahead of time?

During a disaster, communication can become limited.  Take some time to discuss with the family the steps they should take if a disaster occurs.  Knowing evacuation routes and meeting point locations etc. are important things that every member of the household should be aware of.  Keep in mind that these meeting points will depend on the type of disaster.

Prepare an emergency go kit.  This is an essential thing to have, especially if you have very little notice to evacuate.  The kit should contain all you need to survive for a few days.  Remember to include extra medication, some cash and a copy of important documents as well as water and food supplies.

Depending on the kind of natural disaster, a home might sustain a great deal of damage.  While its impossible to prevent some damage, steps can be taken to minimize it.  For example, keeping trees well-trimmed can stop branches and tree limbs from falling on roofs or power lines.  If gutters and downspouts are kept clear of debris and dirt, large amounts of water can drain away from the home easier.  Fixing small roof repairs such as loose shingles will help prevent damage and, securing loose items will prevent them from becoming a dangerous projectile in high winds.  Another important thing to be aware of is the location of all shut off valves for the home’s utilities like water, gas and electric.  Having these turned off will make a home less hazardous to return to.

While you will hopefully never have to deal with a natural disaster’s effects, advanced preparation for one is a key to staying safe.
